when i was nsf, my CO always drive his gp car home
~lol~ My block downstairs used to have a parked gp car every nite too, before the owner & his family moved out. -
Can MINDEF explain how a car can provide a "commanding" presence to the men in line with the chain of command of a military organization? Its like saying if a 3SG drives to camp in his father's Merc or BMW, his men will see him and respect his commanding presence because he drive a Merc or BMW. So to say...if a 3SG whom rides a Kawasaki bike to camp...will be lacking in such a "commanding" presence unless he rides a Harley Davidson. This simply doesn't make any sense for me man. Well...perhaps its not supposed to make sense for me. If a car can really command respect from the men...the rank insignia of officers, WOs, Specs and enlisted should all change to reflect the logos of cars and motorcycles. CDF should have the Bentley or Rolls Royce logo, Service Chiefs BMWs, Formation Chiefs Mercs, LTC and Colonels Audis or Volvos, Majors Lexus, Captains Toyotas, LTAs Hyundai and 2LTs Chery and so on.

u can't compare with civilian cars. tell me honestly, when u see a general's car within ur vicinity... i am sure u will scramble into attention and such and look "good"....
If you are in range, and you see an audi mid for example, i am pretty sure your discipline will buck up a bit..

Siah lah...if country goes to war..general nowhere to be seen, must rely on his car...den jialat. It was pre-disposed to be A4. Not A4 because of the tender. -
Gee..maybe thats why the Germans fought with such gusto during WWII, it wasn't cuz of Nationalism nor cuz Uncle. Hitler says so...but rather because they were fueled and inspired by Mercedes. They began to loose when our American and British frens sabotaged the Merc. facilities across Germany...now I see why. Commanding Presence...does not come from a car nor the rank on a person's shoulders.

Tell me which of the following you'll instinctively salute quicker, even as you don't recognize the civilian driver as he drives in?
(a) a MID-licensed Audi or Mercedes or Proton, or
(b) another other make, with or without an identifying emblem insignia.
~shrugs~ They're just staff cars, lah. Judging by the models chosen, a cost-conscious way of providing a uniform "institutional" vehicle fleet for senior officers on official business too.

i know of many MAJs and LTCs and even a COL who stay in hdb flat. and most of their cars are jap cars. in fact, the only 'ang moh' car i know they drive is a old school volvo.Originally posted by uglyguy:tat one sure WO car...

i not too sure abt the petrol part, most SAF GP cars petrol all paid for by the goverment, so don't know if its free or must pay. most SAF personnels that drive will have a fleet card (don't know if now still have) quite good discounts if my memory doesn't fail me. -

I was naughty during NSF, those stay-out and book in around 5am+ in Admin Attire so reach camp can immediately 5BX my men.

So the guards thought I am some big shot everytime and quickly open the gate for me and salute me some more.

Hahaha .... I can just see it.
Luckily my unit time was spent in a small combat camp, although I usually panicked too whether a GP car drove in (our MT line didn't have them). Their drivers turned out to be mostly PTEs, & would smirk at me. Still, better that than offending any bigshot who's doing his own driving.
Wonder how the "pro" camp guards (RPs) can survive in, say, Khatib Camp which sees a motley crew of vehicles -- from crab-wearing staff officers on one extreme, to reservists & RT-reportees on the other. Must be a nightmare for SOAY course personnel (fresh from Tekong & still sotong) doing sentry duty. ~lol~
