  Some thing must had shocked his mind. I believe a sane person will not get himself into such trouble when ORD date is due in another month. Possessed,broken relationship or someone he loves most died?

  Back then I met a fella who's been in and out of DB several times. He asked if I wanted weed. I asked him if he was afraid of DB. Think at that time, he had been in service for 3 years or something like that.
  
  His reply shocked me:
  
  "go outside also no money to buy food. db at least got meals"
  
  The fella actually preferred to stay in DB than come out to the real world.

  Yes you are totally correct, think like the Lee son's case - which highlight that duty officer can awol ...... now a guard can disappear with a rifle and ammo, really raise a lot of question on what the hell is nowaday guard duty doing !!!!
  
  First from my my experience last time - only the guards on patrol or station at the gate is issues with rifles and rounds - The rest of the guard that is resting - have all their rifle and rounds all lock up at the guard room... !!!
  
  Since guard duty those on patrol are 2 person , and the gate also more then 2 guards..... I cannot imagine the guy just walking out of the camp like that with rifle..... !!! He must have gone an grab some clothes and a bag or something to put the rifle in and went off ....
  
  The question is how did not camp not miss that guy with in 5 min ? was he on patrol ? why his partner did not know he disappear ? or was he at the gate ? if so why he was allow to issue with rifle and ammo ?

  If the rifle is kept in a bag and the police officers that jump on him are plain cloths without alerting him first. Don't think he has a chance to react to use the rifle.

  The details of the arrest was not released. Was he confronted, talked into surrender? or was he jumped on unsuspectingly by plain clothes officers while he was window shopping? To jump on him is rather easy given that if plain cloths officers can just walk right to him when he wasn't suspecting and confrontational. No need to make the situation so dramatic as if making movie and risk unnecessary violence.

  Won't be surprised if the plain clothes jumped him. Probably safer than trying to talk him into surrendering especially if they can get him unawares.

  for your information, if u read the news or page 1 of this thread, u would know that the lad was supposed to do sentry duty, thus he was issued with rounds. since it was stated he ran off at 2359, he is probably going to take over the new shift at 0000.
  
  as for how he walk out of camp, simple, he probably open the gate himself and walks out. i'm not sure of other camp but for my camp, there's a GATE IC in charge of opening the gate, either the Guard 2IC, a 3SG or the guard 3IC, a CPL. but after midnight as there are no more vechicles or people coming into camp, there will be no more GATE IC duties from 0000 onwards, the sentry will open the gate if there are anyone who wishes to come in (with valid reasons of course).

  Well, I guess his buddy have something in this also since duties are always in pairs.
  
  Depending on the Guard Comd or Guard 2IC, they should have been awake at this time to close the books.
  
  I guess for him to be discovered missing at 2359, it is just an "operational" timing, i bet he is missing even before this time.
  
  My bet is, he was doing the 2200-2359 shift and supposed to turn up at 2359 to hand over. But he did not, that was when he was "officially" discovered missing.
  
  He might have just climbed over some damaged gates (if possible).

  You sure he was doing sentry? All the news reports I saw only mentioned "guard duty".
  
  When I first heard about this, I figured he was on patrol & then climbed over the wall (or something). Patrol guards are also issued live ammo, but they usually work in pairs, so I was thinking maybe it was his buddy who raised the alarm.

  thank you for highlighting. yes indeed the press only says "guard duty" so it could also be prowling as well.
  
  but then again, if it is indeed prowling and he escape by climbing over the walls then this is starting to worry me. if he is able to climb out that means people can also climb in. SAF camps can be so easily trespassed!?

  "Prowler"! I was looking for that word. Somehow "patrol" didn't sound right.
  
  Never been to Mandai Hill Camp before, so I dunno how fortified it is. But if they use the usual welding-mesh type of fence -- eg. Khatib Camp(?) -- then it's not that great an obstacle to clear. Except maybe for the barb wire on top, if any.
  
  I find the idea of deserting via the main gate, with rifle & ammo in hand, quite unbelievably brazen. It's incredibly garang to attempt this. I mean, did he threaten to shoot those trying to stop him? Why not just AWOL, sans weapon?
  
  If it was a spur-of-the-moment decision, then absconding away stealthily sounds more logical. We reservists used to literally "climb over the wall" in ROC, to sneak out of camp. But that was for fun!

  well. like abandoned buildings... camps go into disrepair when there are not NRUs occupying them.
