accordingly to CH 8 news, a 20 years old soldier from mandai hill camp went missing together with a rifle and some bullets yesterday .
He was just arrested at Orchard Road at around 8 pm today...

islandwide security alert on Monday night after he walked out of his Army camp with his SAR-21 assault rifle and several bullets.
After a 20-hour manhunt, police arrested the 20-year-old NSF at 8pm at Orchard Cineleisure, a cinema cum shopping complex in the heart of the Orchard Road tourist belt.
The Straits Times understands that the NSF was in possession of his SAR-21 rifle, loaded with several 5.56mm bullets, when policemen arrested him.

perhaps this highlights an inherent flaw in the way guard duty operates. To my knowledge, you need someone to open the door for you to be able to get outside...... this is all too interesting.
But one should never under estimate the security threat posed by a guy with a rifle and live rounds. -

Missing armed NSman caught in Orchard Road

SINGAPORE: An armed SAF National Serviceman was caught in Orchard Road at 8pm on Monday, 19 hours after he had gone missing from camp.
Police said the 20-year-old went missing at 11.59pm on Sunday from the Mandai Hill Camp, with a rifle and some ammunition issued by the army.
200 officers mounted a manhunt and police found him near Orchard Cineleisure.
They also recovered the missing rifle and ammunition and will investigate the case under the Arm Offences Act.
The Ministry of Defence has identified the NSman as Corporal Dave Teo Ming.
Mindef said he had been given the rifle and ammunition for guard duty.
He is an infantry rifleman from the First Battalion at the Singapore Infantry Regiment.
Corporal Teo was enlisted in the army in September 2005 and will finish his national service with the army next month. - CNA/ir -

come to think of it, knowing singaporeans, even if it happens in the day, a soldier in uniform walking around orchard road with a rifle probably won't get much attention from the normal public. yes he might attract a few stares but people will probably think he's doing patrolling or something, speaking from a civilian's point of view. -
