Here endeth the lesson fool.
Yes the public has a short memory. But memories are considerably extended if you keep giving it the oxygen of publicity. Yes, the man got his name in the paper, but it is certainly not true that all publicity is good publicity. On this occasion, he looks like an incompetent fool because he has stated things that everyone who know anything will know is a complete lie. Lying is normal and is to be commended but only if done properly. This is an example of a lie done wrong.Originally posted by the Bear:your analysis is flawed..
he can make a splash now, get his face in the news... and if there's egg on his face, the Public with the very very very short attention span will forget that too..
but hey, he's got his name in the papers..
I am unfamiliar with this Samy Vellu fellow. However, there are clearly different shads of foolishness. George Bush looks a fool but he is endearing to all the red-neck fools that make up america. Mr Tan looks to be another creature altogether.Originally posted by the Bear:well, Samy Vellu has ALWAYS looked like a fool and he's still there

The person who was caught is my friend and he's not the sort who'd try to pull funny stunts.
I've had my fair share of JB custom, Traffic police rubbish also. Even dare to ask me for a bribe on the spot. But I always make sure they stamp the passport right in front of me. I have a friend who has to 'surrender' his brand new handphone in exchange for release from the custom counter when he did not realise that the counter did not stamp his passport when he went in.
I think this serves as a lesson to all of us who're entering malaysia regardless by bike, car etc to ensure you have everything done before you leave the counter. The Malaysian side is not as clean/safe as in Singapore.
Wholly irrelevant. Unless you are telling us what really happened was that he went to the counter and the immigration officer did not stamp his passport - contradicting what he told the court.Originally posted by MS:The person who was caught is my friend and he's not the sort who'd try to pull funny stunts.

Oh what incisive wit! What penetrating arguments!Originally posted by MS:U dun drive or ride into Malaysia at all right? If you're not sure what is going on, please refrain your remarks.
I agree. Let's have some open discussions or not at all. Everyone here can draw on personal experience but to have a meaningful debate, you need to have an agreed set of facts. Obviously, the only one we have to go on is that stated in the newspaper report (which is supposedly what the guilty party himself said).Originally posted by MS:When unhappy incidences take places, one of the things you hope to happen last is people speculating & jump into conclusions over baseless remarks on your matter.
The actual facts can easily be twisted, spreaded and it can very potentially affect the reputation of the person in unwanted ways.
We should take responsibilities over what we say.
Have integrity over our dealings please.

Your friend probably got into this because he does not pull funny stunts when he has to. He is too straight. We cannot apply Singapore way of life to other countries. Its only at our border and he got into this kind of trouble.
I won't call it asking for bribe. Its a small token to overlook a minor offence. They won't do it for a serious offence. Not having stamp the passport is a small deal which a small token can do the trick. But if you refused, then it becomes a major offence of illegal entry. And when blown out of proportion, and then you propose a big bribe, it will be too late.
Its a way of life in many countries, not only in Malaysia. Wait till he gets into China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Central America, Eastern Europe, Russia, Africa.
Remember : You scratch his back and he will scratch yours.
In general some of the immigration officer from other side can be bribed.Originally posted by KoolKool:cannot be ..... if this is really the case, he would be charged with trying to bribe an immigration officer as well.
