CITY Harvest Church has announced a $310 million expansion plan to buy land, and to erect a building that will house shops, restaurants and a 12,000-seat auditorium.
Founder Kong Hee, 45, said during church services yesterday and last Saturday that the land sale would be completed later this month. He did not specify the location, but said the site would be in the 'central south' district.
He described the site as 'super large'. It is believed the site covers an area as large as three football fields - six times the size of the Protestant church's current home in Jurong West Street 91, which it owns.
'This is truly amazing,' Dr Kong said yesterday at the Singapore Expo, where it has been renting a hall for services. 'Finally, we will have a church in the marketplace, for the marketplace, to penetrate the marketplace.'
The church's plans to incorporate retail elements into its building project follow similar plans announced in 2007 by New Creation Church, another large Christian group in Singapore.
New Creation has teamed up with mall developer CapitaLand Retail to build an 'integrated hub' at Buona Vista. The $1 billion project, when ready in 2012, will house shops, a concert hall and a theatre.
A megachurch sure can rake in the dollars...
Holy crap. That is massive. lol . I gotta admit !
*imagines the area or HDB only for Christians can buy and live, thier own private security forces , retail etc etc.. and its super massive, its like a community within a community, living under different form of PAPPY rules, i can just imagine the political outcome, and one decides to go for politics n BWAM!*
Well, better an influx of Christians than FT's. hahaha

Good to know that. They are so rich so it is good that they know how to make good use of the money. Hope that they do not discriminate and will help people regardless of religion.
No surprise no surprise they have the money to buy land. Just look at the rate the church people are asked to give $$$$ money money money it is possible. To god everything is possible??? wahahahahahhaha!
I believe govt is taking precaution on religious groups getting too big.

Well, hope all of them are really kind-hearted to give without motive and not to create more rice-Christians (convert and we give you food and other necessities/or make the locals listen to their preaching before giving) which is common with some religious charities.
Btw is there any verse in the bible that say God wants you to make churches into megachurches or spent millions to make the churches into eye-poping complex like a shopping mall?
so when is City Harvest going to launch their IPO.......................i truly pity the mindless goons that were suckered via ''tithing'' or otherwise into financing this.
is the founder the pastor i've been hearing that's driving around in a Porsche ? truly there's no better business than running a church.................they should have such a course in university.
there is no direct verse...the ratinale behind this is tat we serve a great God and the one who owns everything in the universe...its parallel to the idea that a king shld be given a majestic palace so in this case, God who is king of kings and lord of lords shld be given the best possible and not a rundown place...
moreover, wif the constant growth of the church congregation, the building at jurong west can no longer accomodate enuff ppl...the 310,000,000 paid out for this new building can seat 12,000 and willl be more worth it in the long run compared to paying monthly rental of an expo hall which seats at most 6,000 ppl...
tithing is a teaching from the book of malachi...so its found in the bible...the onli diff is tat not all churches emphasise this teaching...however, emphasising on it is not wrong of cuz...is there over-emphasis on this teaching? tats subjective and up to individual interpretation...
Wow, so we will have another shopping center and eating area to visit. Of course not visit the church.
You don't need a million dollar church for God, like you said he owns everything...literally your house and mine and even the white house, blue house or whatever buildings that house the presidents/kings of every country. And does God even care about how grand your churches are when he owns everything? All is need is a simple building for his believers to pray...
So the rationale is to accomodate more people who are you,Christians not for God. Stop trying to use him to justify the lavish spending of Mega Churches...

The answer is no to your above question. In fact, God teaches humility.

is tithing a must at chc ? i have a relative who gives to chc but cannot afford to support his mother ? his mother complained to me because she said she pity her son who is the only bread winner at home but instead her son gives to church and does not support her.
thus, i really hope chc puts their money to good use. there are many of his followers forgo to support their parents just to give to chc.
besides tithing, they also collect money during the service.

a must or not a must at chc.
It depends on whether u want to give
however "their teaching always remind us of 100 fold returns"
thats why ppl thought i give 100, will reap 10000 in returns
I believe CHC is one of the mega churches which believe in the prosperity theory.
Personally, I am not for prospertity theory. Crap!
