how would/should one go dealing with this? esp now since it's Xmas.
[just asking k. not talking abt me]
go to church, celebrate. buy presents for family and celebrate without the christian aspects. christmas is more than commemorating the birth of Jesus anyway.
its about shopping and santa claus

what aspects are you looking @ ?
going to church? shopping?
My case is non christian in christian family. Among my close relatives (brothers and sisters), my family is the only family who is non-christian. But because of my house facilities, they come over to my place for Christmas celebration. I do not mind and they are also very "automatic", they don't hold prayers in my house.
ever wonder why billions of people believed in something that its existence is still debatable after millennium of years.
however what is beyond debate is that bible was written and invented by men.

May I ask a christian's opinion of offerring a joss sticks at the request of a Taoist parents ?
In my experience, most christian will refuse.
I think they shouldn't refuse, just take it as a chinese custom and please your parents.

I do post this question too.
Why cannot hold joss stick in front of one's late father or mother?
Without them, you will not be here going to church right?
Without them to feed you and rare you up, will you be here going to church?
So, I find it nothing wrong holding a joss stick and pay respect to one's late parents.
I totally agreed with Laf.

yes, I saw your post earlier regarding this, and I pose the question here again.
few days passed and no christian follow up. Maybe they are busy preparing for christmas.
I thought i explained it already in another thread regarding the joss sticks.
My dad is atheist, his family is buddhist, my mum's side is christian. So you guys dont have to go around posting in all the threads of Eternal Hope regarding repeated questions.

Hi, I presume you and your sister grew up in a buddhism following parents. How do your father and mother cope with your sister and you going to a church ? Are they happy or unhappy?

The same thing can be turned around, why do you have to hold joss sticks to pay respects to your parents? It is what is in your heart that counts and not your outward show. It is ultimately best that you pay your parents respects while they are still alive, once they are dead, will they know? They are sleeping already.
The other reason, and the one that you will most probably want to argue about is that using joss sticks to pay respects etc be it ancestral worship etc has to do with praying to idols and the like and it is a commandment of Yahweh (G_d) that we not do so.
yes its true that respect comes from the heart and you should respect them when they were alive. as its a chinese custom inbred into chinese culture, offering of joss sticks is considered as respect for the dead.
but the issue here is not the offering of joss sticks. its the insensitivities where customs is concerned. how would you feel when someone near and dear to you told you in the context of a wake that, you should not offer joss sticks as its not in my religion to do that. its not only curt, but lack of sensitivity to that person's feelings. if next time you go to a wake in a chinese tradition, you wore a cross on your neck and someone in the wake told you to remove the cross, as its not in my religion to have someone wearing a cross during a wake, how would you have felt?
I know some christians will tell you that the idol you are praying are satanic or made of wood when talking about religion. they will feel pity for you because in their minds, your religion are false and the god you are praying and worshipping are false too.
by the same token, arent they also doing the same thing, ie worshipping their god. other religions can also use their interpretation in their religion that the god you are praying are also false.

Thks for sharing your infor.
If that is so, then why those terminal ill patients, about to die, the pple come and want to convert them to christian? The pple should respect while they are still alove, onces they are dead, will they know they already become christian? They are sleeping already.
Just logic.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Sometimes being agnostic(or atheist, or whatever you wanna call it) is good...
You dun get offended in anyway in these kinda threads
It's a common sight that Ts'es come and post a question and never bother to check back and clarify stuffs...
whether your sis believe in god or not, I think thats her perogative, as long as she does not preach you or try to convert you to her religion, but I believe she will quietly, because she wont want you to go to hell and wish you to join her in heaven instead.
but having said that, no matter what religion you are in, you should adopt common sense and human values on your life and decision makings. I know a lot of people do or avoid doing things based on their holy book or religion.
what to do as an atheist in a superstitious religious society?
you should know killing of a fellow human is bad because it took away the right to live of the other person and you have no right to take the live of another humans, whatever the reason, unless you are involved in a war. in a war as a soldier, you have no choice but to kill your enemy in the battlefield so as to protect your homeland from falling. when you kill someone, your conscience is affected and disturbed, as deep down you know that is wrong and not right, thats why your inner peace is disturbed. you do not need to rely on your holy book or religion to tell you that killing another human is wrong.
