Is having sexual relations with a prostitute as serious a sin as killing someone or telling a lie?
a mistake is a mistake..adam and eve introduced death to all jus because they ate some dumb fruit they aint supposed to..
from what i remembered, fornication is very detestable to God's eyes. so is there a lighter sin??

in the first place, what is the context of "sin" in your question?
http://www.answers.com/topic/sin
sin as in the Christian context - there is no such thing as greater sin or lesser sin.
sin as in the context of wrong doing - sure there are differences - for example in the court of law.
Well I think sins cover a full spectrum.
Quote from the link ChinEng gave,
Actual sin, consisting of evil acts, words, and deeds, is in turn divided into mortal sin, in which the perpetrator deliberately turns away from God, and venial sin, a less serious transgression committed without full awareness of wrongdoing.
In that paragraph there are less serious sins and I think that's only one way of categorizing sins according to its severity.
Jesus also spoke that every sins could be forgiven except the sin of insulting the Holy spirit.
Would a man who fell in love with another man's wife but did nothing immoral with her sins
as grave as another man who fell in love and went to bed with her on many occasions?
would a man who hurted his friend's feeling commits a sin as grave as one who killed his friend?
I don't think so. God is fair.
If men who are evil know that an unlawful act deserve punishment and weigh each crime according to its severity I don't see why God who is holy would not.

They didn't just ate the fruit of knowledge...they broke God's law. And that sinning and for every sin there is a punishment. God could not live together with sinful creations so He casted them out of Eden.

but we dont call breaking the law of a country as sinning right?
Sin, from what i gather is used more for religious laws and morals.
Its still hard to think that back in the Old Testament times, theres all the rituals and punishments for a variety of 'wrongdoings', can find it in the Books of the Law (first few books).
Well, i know a sin is a sin, just like how a lie is a like (doesnt matter if its 'white' or not). And we are all born sinners and need God's sanctification.
My next point is, the world is filled with sin, agreed?, and how would we go about being 'destined for heaven' if we fall now and again? (sin is sin?)
If your questions is how can one enter Heaven when one is a sinner? Perhaps, below may help:
LK 24:45-48
45 He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures,
46 and he said to them, 'So it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,
47 and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses to this.
Finally, it all boils down to if your heart truely repent or it is just lips service? You cannot be going Geylang every week and saying every week you are sorry without any real intention to change the way of life that you know is wrong (if you believed that it is so).
Just like if one said sorry for the sake of saying without truely believing that one is wrong and making any effort to change.
Another way to look at this is like a smoker trying to quite because he knows that it is bad for his health. He tried but get tempted to smoke again....but because he really wanted to quit and is serious about it, he will be eventually be able to quit. He will seek help and make efforts to change because he wanted to.
Not just by saying "I want to quit" everyday but continuing to smoke "the last stick". Hope this make some sense.
Define sin properly and you will not have a problem with lesser or greater sin. Sin is sin whether small or big. Actually the definition of sin from the bible is this : SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW.

well said.
repentence isn't the only solution, but turning 180 degrees away from the past.
and yea, for the wages of sin is DEATH
Rom 6: 15-23
15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. 18You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
19I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. 20When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in[b] Christ Jesus our Lord.

actually if you read carefully what i said, u would noticed my main point was not the damned fruit.i said they were not supposed to. meaning they fall short of God's laws.=sin
maybe if we say sin=death den it will be clearer we are not supposed to sin regardless of the severity of the sin??
