Actually when I read that part of your quote, I thought it sounded condescending.
Personally I see nothing wrong with watching problematic shows like Golden Compass if the intention is to guide your kids.
Macross and protoculture have nothing to do whatsoever with going against Yahweh. The golden compass is exactly that. If you cannot see the difference, then, your problem.
Surely it is better than those who have shunned the movie, then condemn the movie non-stop. When people ask whether they have seen the movie, then they go opps! Wa leow, never see the movie but still talk so much?
Regarding parenting,
Unker Eng may seems like a "anything also can" parent. Harry Potter is ok, Golden Compass is ok, Narnia is ok, Christmas is ok etc.
But I have observed, he can temper discipline with freedom very well. The same parent who allows Harry Potter also emphasize the solemnity of worship. When kids run around during service, he is displeased and thought the parents should be doing something.
I also believe he has a limit. Things like oujia board should be a no-no for his kids. -

I have been thinking, how long can parents "censor" problematic books or movies from their kids? Now with globalization and internet, you really can't hide from "bad" influence forever.
For 16 years, you raise your kids to be good Christians. When the time comes for them to be independent, alas, they have not been equipped with the critieria thinking skill needed to face the secular world. -

If you cannot keep your child away from the media because you are not on his case for 24/7, you should at least spend time with the child WITH the media and GUIDE the child along the way. Media has nothing to do with what we agree on morally or spiritually - it is just there - COPE WITH IT!

i am exposing my boys to the media to equip them with the ability to cope with the secular world.
i do not hide many things from them.
they even went through a "course" with me on all the different swear words that they will encounter. i told them: they can choose to use them or not - it's up to them. guess what, as far as i know, they have never used a swear word purely because they know it is rude and unnecessary.
during our holiday travels, we even go up in front of shops that sell pornograpy and i tell them what the business is, inside....
parenting, to me, is mentoring (note that I do not say I know it all). Mentoring someone to be able to walk on his own two feet, so that when the mentor is not around anymore, the individual can carry his own weight and doing what is right.
Seeing "National Treasure II" this afternoon..... i certainly hope that this movie will agree with my moral and spiritual upbringing -
