lets talk about family functions... how about not attenting family functions???
to be honest, a lot of teens don't like to attent family functions with their parents, none of my nephews and neices attend the family function anymore, and none of them go to church either (they rather go shopping or movies with thier friends). can we then say shopping and movies affects the social fabric? of course not...
oh... this is one of the reason why I attend these so call 'mega church', 4 services to choose from, so I can balance between attending family functions and church services. -
In the early days, I would queue up for midweek. Until they implemented the "1 ticket per person unless you have a spouse" rule. Imagine this:
I, not being a member of the church and not even a christian, brought friends to NCC. So as guests, I feel these friends have a right for tickets to be given to them. You can't expect them to arrive 1 hour before the session right? People have work and school before that. -

Cell group and tithing are encouraged, not compulsory.
the loss for not putting God first... hmmm less contact time with Him??? if God is not first, then you don't really believe He is God, right? (Church is not God, missed church service does not equate to not putting God first, must be clear on this)
the loss of not attending cell group, not tithing??? err... can't think of what is the loss. afterall, not every church have cell group... and not everyone tithe (especially not the kids who are not even earning a salary)
the loss of not attending church service??? missed the sermon/teaching (but can also listen to sermons on tapes/cd) ... oh yah... missed the church weekly announcement?

All said, I think there is no one solution that can solve the issue. Every single case will be unique.
I think as the church need to empathise with the parents who want their children to do well academically and have good family ties (or at least be 'obedient' children).
I won't comment on what the parents or students should do because they have to work it out as a family.
If we are in the know or directly deal with such incidents (you're a church leader, or concerned party), we need to communicate well with everyone to resolve the issue. It's not easy, but our word and actions will be a testimony of our faith. -

if i may speak another word of experience from being in a church like that before:
its true that they do take alot of time.. my dad (before he became a christian), he complained that i leave the house early in the morning, and come back very late at night.
but its not really surprising la. because its quite logical
everytime someone takes up a new activity etc, more time than usual is being used up.
like before i went to church, most of my time would still be at home right?
we only have 24 hours a day, the more activity we have, its very obvious that the time we spend normally would be lesser. so not surprising that the parents seldom see their kids.
also being very new, everything seems exciting, so its also quite normal they would be more attracted to the activities of the church. -
