I do not think its effective to teach about the purpose of life.
Think its better to first try understand this person, and what is driving him to this thought of suicide.
What he don't need is a lecture on the purpose of life, what he probably need to know there is a purpose in life and that there are people who care.

my response is that a person with suicide thoughts does not need a lecture on 'what is the purpose of life?' there is nothing to teach him about the purpose of life, what he need is a lifeline not a lecture.

ps: maybe some people here don't agree with me, I strongly feel that its not ethical to talk/share religion to people who are on the verge of suicide (meaning those facing serious problem), cause I feel that they may be in a very desprate situation and can be easily 'preyed' on.
practical assistance should be given purely out of compassion and should not be use as a tool for conversion. -

There is no one size fit all type of answer to this, cause its all depends on what type of situation this person is in? we don't tell him, let him do the talking, and come to his conclusion that there is he have a purpose to live (we can only guide, but not dictate) -

Purpose of life is to have fun. Or become ultimate in spirituality, since he probably doesnt have anything else to do.

His parents had to spend loads of money on his operations probably to try to help him with his physical abnormalties, I don't see how he can still see his parents doesn't see him as important? after all these scarifices they made for him.
Maybe what he really need is someone to talk to or someone he can confide with?
For now, what you can do is to just be a friend, perhaps you can encourage him to understand his parents better? sometimes, the best thing a friend can do, is just to be there to listen and not lecture.
I can understand you problem, sometimes its easlier to just give them our 2 cents worth of advise, tell them what we think the purpose of life is or are, but we need to understand that though God have a purpose for each of us, it may differ between person, and His purpose for you may be different from His purpose for him (your friend) or me. Therefore, it may be better to just encourage him that there is a purpose for him (and also there is hope), and help him to find out for himself what this purpose is for him.

if he is religious enough, its ok to tell him god's purpose in life, quoting scriptures and hope he can see the light
if he is not, use another tactic -
