I read about it in a history book in the book store in Wheellocke place a few years ago. I then found this link, it says it somewhere in the first few paragraphs in page 3. But ya, its not a popular notion now.Originally posted by Ito_^:
did the pope canonized him?Originally posted by wisefool83:I read about it in a history book in the book store in Wheellocke place a few ago. Until the Pope had an issue with the Chinese praying to their ancestors and banned the practice among converted Chinese. The Chinese Emperor then, who was Kang Xi, flew into rage when he found out about the decree, banned and deported the missionaries.
That is SO cool!Originally posted by wisefool83:Speaking of tolerance though, my best friend's family is quite an example. The mother is a Catholic, the father is a devoted buddhist, he himself is a Christian and his sister has a Malay boyfriend which means she would have to convert to Islam. Talk about diversity and tolerance!
If I were KangXi I would too!Originally posted by wisefool83:I read about it in a history book in the book store in Wheellocke place a few ago. Not really, just accept their existence and is quite alright to co-exist on a mutual respect level. The bible is a supplement reading to the Muslim and they also honour Jesus, but only as a prophet not God.Originally posted by nomood:hmm, just to be a little clearer on what you're saying, when you say that islam accepts all religions that came to be before islam, are you suggesting that islam accepts their teachings?
I think islam is quite poor thing, alway getting bullied by other religions.
How can they convert to Christianity?Originally posted by nomood:If I were KangXi I would too!
Many taoist/buddhist practices have already found themselves a place in mainstream chinese practices. It's quite disturbing to have someone come along and ban practices which forms the backbone of the chinese culture.

Edit: The only empreror that I knew converted to christinity was GuangXu. Even that was very questionable...
I'm sorry, but the bible to them is corrupted.Originally posted by wisefool83:Not really, just accept their existence and is quite alright to co-exist on a mutual respect level. The bible is a supplement reading to the Muslim and they also honour Jesus, but only as a prophet not God.
Technically yes, but the Emperor I was talking about was Ming Xizhong/ Tianqi Emperor, who was mentally challenged. He couldn't care a F*** about any of this Sh1t and simply convert when one of his trusted official ask him to. Furthermore, the Chinese back then didn't know anything about catholic theology and their persception on religion is very different from westerners. The Emperor didn't really practice the religion though, he was just baptised, which technically made him a Catholic/Christian.Originally posted by Icemoon:How can they convert to Christianity?
If an emperor converts to Catholicism, he is under the Pope.
If an emperor converts to Christianity in general, he is the Son of Heaven, same as Jesus? I am assuming God and Heaven are the same?
They don't see this as "untouchable" kind of corrupt, just not 100% accurate. So they read it with a pinch of salt, but is still a supplementary reading. Many Biblic characters are well-known to Muslims.Originally posted by Icemoon:I'm sorry, but the bible to them is corrupted.
Do you treat corrupted text as "supplementary reading"?
Nope. It isnt. If you think so, you definately belong to a cult.Originally posted by nomood:Tolerates no other alternative views/religions.

We christians dont view ourselves as superior or whatever cos Jesus dies for everyone on the cross. On the other hand, we thank God for giving us the wisdom to see the truth. Therefore, we arent supposed to view ourselves as exclusive.

you mean i am superior cos i can be saved?.Originally posted by Icemoon:This is much unjustified. ming ming jiu shi view yourself more superior mah.
Contrast this with the classical Jewish view - while they are God's chosen people, they have to obey the 613 commandments (during biblical times, now there are less) but gentiles obey at most 10.
So if anyone accuses the Jews of being superior, let it be known that the burden is on them, not the gentiles, to be the light to the nations. You wouldn't even want to be a Jew liao.
no .. they don't care whether you are saved or not.Originally posted by davidche:you mean i am superior cos i can be saved?.
I think happy is a better word you know?
The line between proud and feeling of superiority is unclear
oh...Originally posted by Icemoon:no .. they don't care whether you are saved or not.
They think you are superior because you insist yours is the only way.
Originally posted by davidche:I think this superior business is really hypocritical.
Christianity tolerates other religions.
Christianity disagrees with other religions.

I highly doubt that the bible is a supplementary reading to the muslims. It's technically heresy to them.Originally posted by wisefool83:The bible is a supplement reading to the Muslim and they also honour Jesus, but only as a prophet not God.
of course, that's what christianity is about isn't it?Originally posted by shade343:Nope. It isnt. If you think so, you definately belong to a cult.
