chinese have a saying. "1 day in the heavens, 1 year on the earthly plane"Originally posted by OO_OO_OO:the thing is.. according to the bible, the universe is 6000 years old.
according to the big bang theory, the universe is god knows how old.
so yeah, the contradiction lies there.
and theres also the thory of mankind. the bible states that adam and eve were the first humans to walk the earth. evolution states that we were all monkeys or smt
Actually the chinese saying is self contradicted by one of their greatest novel.Originally posted by HENG@:chinese have a saying. "1 day in the heavens, 1 year on the earthly plane"
i wonder why we're so darned sure that 6000 yrs is not according to a different scale of time to humans' scale of time.
unfortunately Icemoon is not smart enuf to realise a novel is FICTION. U one of those anti-Dan Brown-ers too?Originally posted by Icemoon:Actually the chinese saying is self contradicted by one of their greatest novel.
So when Sun Wukong went heaven to seek help, spending a few minutes in heaven, a few months have transpired on Earth?
KNS .. if a novel is fiction, then where do you get the famous chinese saying?Originally posted by HENG@:unfortunately Icemoon is not smart enuf to realise a novel is FICTION. U one of those anti-Dan Brown-ers too?
damn pro.Originally posted by Icemoon:KNS .. if a novel is fiction, then where do you get the famous chinese saying?
No doubt from some fiction too right?
sry, my bad, i was copying from a book so that book is merely BS.Originally posted by kaister:Davidche, do you even understand what you were writing? I guess maybe not.
2nd law of thermodynamics and LIFE contradicts each other, and not evolution. The law states that eventually everything will go into disarray and chaos.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_law_of_thermodynamics
The very purpose of life is to create order out of chaos! Your arguement doesn't stand or contribute to the arguement either way.
so far i haven't really lose yet ..Originally posted by davidche:damn pro.

After his service in the war, Socrates devoted himself to his favorite pastime: the pursuit of truth.
His reputation as a philosopher, literally meaning 'a lover of wisdom', soon spread all over Athens and beyond. When told that the Oracle of Delphi had revealed to one of his friends that Socrates was the wisest man in Athens, he responded not by boasting or celebrating, but by trying to prove the Oracle wrong.
So Socrates decided he would try and find out if anyone knew what was truly worthwhile in life, because anyone who knew that would surely be wiser than him. He set about questioning everyone he could find, but no one could give him a satisfactory answer. Instead they all pretended to know something they clearly did not.
Finally he realized the Oracle might be right after all. He was the wisest man in Athens because he alone was prepared to admit his own ignorance rather than pretend to know something he did not.
No worries, we're all here to learn right?Originally posted by davidche:sry, my bad, i was copying from a book so that book is merely BS.
I didn't know Jehovah witnesses were banned in Singapore. There're plenty serving their NS in the DB...Originally posted by Fatum:I was ambushed by some jehovah witnesses the other day (not in Singapore, where they are banned) ...
and I got a few pamphlets from them to read ....
one of them was on creationism vs evolution, it's interesting though, that the emphasis was on whether life arose independently or was created by some higher sentinent ... it also touched on whether it's a case of this higher sentinent kick starting the process and evolution as the catalyst to produce the diversity and feccundity that we see on earth today ...
I dunno what to make of it, it smacks vaguely of backpeddling to me ....
actually evolution the process, is something that has been scientifically proven before, starting from Darwin's pigeons, there were various experiments that have proved that evolution and divergence of life do take place, how else did we get assorted breeds of dogs or cats or fish then ? ... what about cross-breeding ? ... doesn't creationism implicitly denys the possibility of species cross-breeding, since every single one was created by some higher sentinent ? ...
what is in dispute, is the mechanism which directs this process, and perhaps religion could have done better by focusing on the wonder of this mechanism instead of denying that the process ever took place ...
it's interesting to note that Darwin remained a life long agnostic, but was never an atheist ... perhaps he was just sickened of the organized religions of his day ...
they aren't ? ... hmmmm ...Originally posted by kaister:I didn't know Jehovah witnesses were banned in Singapore. There're plenty serving their NS in the DB...
sounds more like the Mormons leh, so far the Mormons I encountered all wear business suits ones, those JWs that I met wear very casual and almost always are going around knocking on doors to try to do BS with you type.Originally posted by Fatum:they aren't ? ... hmmmm ...
I've not seen one or been accosted by one before, but you can always tell a jehovah witness around on the campus, they are the chaps dressed in somber business suits, and they are not business faculty students because they don't have dyed hair ... and they'll ambush the international students and ply them with preaching material ... and are so damm nice and persistent you want to punch them in the face just to see them angry sometimes ...
nope, JW alright, mormon evangelists are also neatly dressed, but they'll go around in their trademark white short sleeved shirt, black pants, and tie and they won't vary ...Originally posted by vince69:sounds more like the Mormons leh, so far the Mormons I encountered all wear business suits ones, those JWs that I met wear very casual and almost always are going around knocking on doors to try to do BS with you type.
i understand *wink winkOriginally posted by kaister:No worries, we're all here to learn right?
Just because a book was there for a very long time and it was written by well-respected people doesn't mean it stands for the truth... *Wink wink
You've got to think for yourself instead of letting a book guide all your actions.
(If that wasn't obvious enough, you probably need to think harder)
same thing happened at my place. they invited me to go for their talk at Centiniel Park (still remember this place?)Originally posted by vince69:still remember that poor JW guy who visited my flat when I was still studying in Sydney, really kenna from us.
