How was salvation "attained" before Pentecost?

  I always thought humans are totally depraved and need the help of the Holy Spirit.
  
  Then how come the robber and the multitudes believed in Jesus .. before Pentecost?

  If u read Genesis the Holy Spirit was already present. God has no beginning and no end. so Pentecost is not the Birthday of the Spirit of God. It is merely the fufilment of Prophet Joel's prophecy that one day God will pour out His Spirit upon all flesh.
  
  in the OT, there are instances where the Spirit came upon people to empower and equip them for His service. The pouring of Spirit is not a salvation issue. it is a service issue.
  
  U r filled with His Spirit to serve and witness.

  Weak argument. Never before was the Spirit used for salvation because the issue of Jesus was never there.
  
  In Jewish theology, you don't need the Spirit to believe in the Shema.

  Because the Holy Spirit was working in their lives convicting, convincing and woing them. Still the same. They were looking forward to a Savior. We on the other hand look back.
