Bangkok is quite safe lah.....
I normally stay at Sheraton Sukhomvit or Grand Hyatt (I think it is Hyatt - gone to too many places lah)... typical super 5 star business hotel. All have superb breakfast.
Shopping at MBK - I don't think one can bargain much, especially the clothing. Most places sell at 199 baht for all sizes, which is about S$10. Very good quality. Most of my sons and my T shirts are from MBK. Buy more get slightlycheaper (but I don't think it's worth the hassle - a few cents only lah). Alternative there is a chain store called "No Problem" that sells even cheaper T-shirts or Collared-T-shirts (but design not as good). Food stuff is good: the bak hu (floss type or hard ones looking like dog poo) is superb. Then there's the dried durian (can bring back) too. Don't buy pirated DVDs - not cheap. Original DVDs can be cheap - can check it out. PS2/Xbox games available too but I think these are cheaper across the not-so-scenic bridge.
Chaktuchak - Not necessarily a weekend market, weekdays shopping is also available, slightly fewer shops and possibily less crowd. Super cheap. Can bargain. Plan a day there if you like shopping and mingling with the crowd. Bring lots of water and wear singlet and shorts. See bay juat!
Chao Phraya river cruise - can't remember the BTS (their aboveground train system) station, but one that ends. Has a dock and a cheap tourist attraction in the form of a river cruise - good to spend half a day, there are stops along the way where one can visit the royal barge museum. Can get off at any one stop and board again without charge.
The temples - my family enjoyed that too. Good to get some knowledge of the Thai and Buddhist culture. Good photo opportunity.
World Plaza (formerly called World Trade Center) - I hope the renovation is over. If not skip it. There's a big Isetan there.
Siam Sq/Siam Discovery Center/Siam Paragon - all in the same area, adjacent to MBK. Quite upmarket - look, see, enjoy the aircon, walk out. Siam Paragon has these series of 3D TV advertisement - quite cool.
Another thing to buy for gf/mother/auntie/future mother-in-law : Naraya silk products - lipstick holder, wallet, bags, dam cheap.
Travel by the subway or the BTS - cheep cheep.... Careful of the tuk-tuks, sometimes they rip you off... Taxis are metered, but kena the jam, that's it.
Don't forget the Silom Night Bazaar, or Patpong..... -

End of the year, planning for Nisneynand, Unibersal Studio, and Vegas..... very very poor.... maybe sleep on the streets. -

There is a Black Church near or along Sathon Road... it is like what you see on TV; people clapping and dancing on the pews and shouting very loudly... big well proportioned blacks singing and dancing in the pews and shouting hallelujah!!! a sight to behold up close.
If you are a Christian who does not like to see sexy stuff / if not... avoid/goto Soi Cowboy (Sukhumvit Soi 21/23; BTS ASOKE Station; MRT Sukhumvit Station) Nana Plaza (Sukhumvit Soi 4; BTS NANA Station) and of course the famous PATPONG (BTS Sala Deng station and MRT Si Lom Station)
The Big Gigantic Buildings that says MASSAGE are bath houses... that is to say someone of the opposite sex gives you a bath.
So if you want to have a good Thai traditional massage; make sure outside it says: Thai traditional massage. For higher class and more expensive Thai traditional massage you can go to Grand Diamond next to Pantip plaza, the Thia version of Sin Lim square (if you are into IT you can go there). They have 2 rates, a daytime rate of maybe 500 baht for 2 hours or 700 baht at popular business hours.
Or you can get cheap and good at soi 22 sukhumvit (soi 22 is not opposite soi 23) for 250baht 2 hours (Between BTS Asoke and BTS Phrom Phong) There are lots of massage place along the soi so make sure you go to the one opposite the FAMILY MART (like 711 but is color themed green) There are two side by side opposite the FAMILY Mart go to the one further in; nearer to Queens Hotel.
If you are going to Chatujek Weekend market... you can take BTS to MO CHIT Station or take the MRT and get off directly at the market. Stop at Kamphaeng Phet Station and not Chatuchak Park station.
For good and cheap seafood; stop at Huai Khwang MRT Station and go to the SOM BOON SEAFOOD RESTAURANT - you must come out from the correct exit. I think there are 3 or 4 exits.. go out by the one that leads to Huai Khwang Market.
If you go to their cinema to watch a show, before the show starts, you must stand up to pay respect to their King.
Some useful Thai phrases: Khop Khum Rrup (kob3 kun1 kap2) Thank You or if you are a woman you say Khop Khum Ka (kob3 kun1 ka2)
To be more polite you say Khop Khum Ma Rrup (kob3 kun1 mah4 kap2)
To be even more polite you say Khop Khum Ma Rrup Phom (kob3 kun1 ma4 kap2 pom4) -
Don't forget to "wai" elderly people you know... "wai" is claps your hands together and place your thumbs on your nose and bow your head a little; if you are a woman, you curtsy as well... and that is, bend you knees a little.
If you are on the bus or MRT when a kid or elderly or disabled or pregnant woman comes on board, to be like the Thais, you must fight to give them your seat....

OK I haven't been to Bangkok for 2months now... so sad
OK there is a brand new shopping complex... supposedly the biggest mall in SEA - next to Siam BTS Station... called the Paragon... sells high end branded goods.... cheaper in Spore, branded goods.
The biggest mall in SEA (until Mid Vallet mall in KL) used to be SEACON SQUARE at the outskirts of Bangkok (about 20km outside BKK city central. ) A little like MBK... but much bigger and cheaper; so if you are adventurous tell the taxi drive "Seacon Square, Tanon Srinakarin (tanon=Road.... ta2non1)
After Siam station is Chit Lom station... the station is linked directly to Central Chit Lom (central is pronounced centran... check bill is check bin.. get it? tral=tran; bill=bin.) At central chit lom, you can get to a Marche style restaurant/food court on the 7th level.
Oh if you are the type who likes to buy clothes for teddy bears, you can get it at central chit lom. -
