Jesus is God'I and the Father are one.' - John 10:30
There is one final section of John 17:11 we need to examine before we move on:'protect them by the power of yourname - the name you gave me - so that they may be as one as we are one.' Christ is praying here that the same unity which exists between Himself and His Father might be experienced by His disciples. What a staggering thought it is that the carpenter of Nazareth is one with the Father - God in human form. I remember being struck by this thought during the first weeks of my conversion. I could not get over it then, and I have not been able to get over it since.
Some years ago, when talking to a Jehovah's Witness about the nature of Jesus Christ (as we mentioned earlier, Jehovah's Witness
do not believe Jesus is God), I drew his attention to this verse and quoted the words, 'that they may be one as we are one.' He countered, ' But Jesus did not mean one in essence; He meant one in purpose. He was not making Himself out to be God here, but saying rather than He and God were one in intention.' I then invited him to turn to the passage in John 10 which in our reading for today and asked him if he believed the same about John 10:30. 'Yes,' he replied, 'there again Jesus was claiming to be one with God in purpose.' 'It's a strange thing.' I said, 'that men who actually heard those words understood Jesus to be claiming equality with God and picked up stones to stone Him. Yet you, standing here 2,000 years later, have a different interpretation.' He closed his Bible and walked away.
Be staggered by this truth if you will, but never let go of it. Jesus Christ is God. Not like God, but fully God. He is God in human form.
