  when a person had made his/her decision to follow Christ, thereby repented of his/her past and receievd salvation by grace that is from God. God had promised His seal of approval in the form of the Holy Spirit into his/her life. Hence this person is consider a part of Christ as far as God is concern.
  
  Water baptism is an ordinance to help the person some sort like to draw a line and make a stand/declaration on that he/she had decided.
  
  Personally, I feel that you can have the former without the latter and still be considered saved but without the former, the latter will be nothing but a show only.
