normally, when we want to study/interpret the Bible, we will also need to look at the verses before and after it so that what we read/interpret will be keep in context from the rest of the passage
15"If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.' 17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.
18"I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
19"Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."
Jesus is giving the apostles the authority to rule and lead the Church.Originally posted by babyys:"Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
I would like to know what does Jesus mean when he mentioned the above verse? Does it refer to a covernant or to what we proclaim? Thanks in advance.
Just as it is now. The Church is built on the foundational doctrine of Jesus Christ's person and saving work from the teachings of the apostles.Originally posted by SingaporeMacross:and who interacted with the local churches at that time?
the apostles!
Sorry here's what i meant...........[sorry my mind is tired right now]Originally posted by SingaporeMacross:if you claim the Holy Spirit to be the interpretor of the Scripture, why do all the churches contradict one another if they claim to follow the Bible?
huh? so you are saying that God's teaching changes over time? if that's the case, we don't need the bible!Originally posted by Ironside:I do not claim that Paul said it. Though he did not say it verbatim.
Just as Christians are undergoing sanctification in character to conform to the image of Christ, Christians are in the process of growing and maturing in their theology and knowledge of God.
This process however has ups and downs.
Remaining corruption [in the Christian] is always the culprit [not the Holy Spirit] why Christians are hampered in their knowledge of God. The Holy Spirit is always there to guide into all truth.
Sin [prejudices, biases, hardness of heart, unbelief, prayerlessness, quenching the Spirt, grieving the Holy Spirit, not being filled with the Spirit and etc.] fogs and stifles the mind of the Christian to the leading and illumination of the HOly Spirit.
The apostles in their "baby" days had the greatest theology teacher in the world to guide them, but they were unable to grasp and assimilate the truth imparted by the Teacher because their hardness of heart, they have become temporarily dull in hearing.
And so it is with the real Vicar of Christ on earth now [the Holy Spirit], He is always there to teach and guide into all truth.....question is: "Are Christians really willing to learn 100%, [set aside their biases and prejudices and etc.]?
In glory, we will all have one theology.

We do not label the Holy Spirit as the Vicar of Christ. The Holy Spirit is far greater than that. He is the Advocate, the Paraclete, the Comforter.
The Vicar of Christ is only a man. You can guess who.
