The blessed words: ‘The just shall live by faith’ appears four times in the Bible.
First in Habakkuk, then in Romans, in Galatians and in Hebrews.
In Habakkuk, the immediate context of the words speak of a coming impending disaster. Particularly an attack by the Chaldeans [Babylonians] as punishment of the nationÂ’s long standing disobedience. These Chaldeans were known for their ruthlessness. They will ravage and plunder their possessions, their vineyards, fig tress and other agricultural possessions of the nation. Some will die, others will suffer and etc. but the just shall live by faith [faithfulness and integrity]. ThatÂ’s the primary meaning of the words as used by Habakkuk.
However, Paul being inspired of God applied these words to justification by faith and the perseverance of the saints in Romans, Galatians and Hebrews [for I believe that Paul was the one wrote Hebrews].
Ro 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith."
Ga 3:0 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them."
11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for "the just shall live by faith."
Heb 10:35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.
36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise:
37 "For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry.
38 Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him."
39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.
