Hmm, perhaps you have misunderstood the term "idolatory". Idolatory in the bibles refers to the worshipping of false gods or demonic statues.Originally posted by M©+square:Unfortunately when a physical statue is set up, it is usually in relation with idolatry.
Theologically the reason given for prohibiting idols is that God is unique and unrepresentable.
Because of this. It is seemed to misrepresent God or Jesus in any form of statues.
To cast God who is Spirit and omnipotent to a physical item. Is somewhat to be frowned upon personally.
No matter what reasons used for good cause, it is still limiting God and worship to the circumstances of outward/physical conditions.
Statues and idolatry were not encouraged and not said in the Gospels.
But what about the one where God commands Moses to make a bronze serpent? How about the metal angels?Originally posted by M©+square:Unfortunately when a physical statue is set up, it is usually in relation with idolatry.

You are right when you say that images are necessary to help focus in prayer. However, we Catholics do not pray nor worship statues. Like you said, only use them for concentration.Originally posted by shade343:Hmm, perhaps you have misunderstood the term "idolatory". When Jesus was alive, people could easily focused on his image and his teachings. Now that he physically isnt here, it would be difficult for followers to have an image to focus on. Ordinary humans are easily distracted and thus need a godly image to focus on. As such, what is wrong with praying to a staue of Jesus?
How is worshipping Jesus considered "limiting"? The bibles and the gospels has never said it was wrong to worship an image or statue of a God.
Perhaps, you need to correct yourself in the meaning of "idolatory".
You will notice, despite the explainations, which is not needed, some people like to take potshots at the Catholics or other faiths for this.Originally posted by SingaporeMacross:You are right when you say that images are necessary to help focus in prayer. By concentrating and focusing on them, you are already praying to them. You dont really have to take my words at literal value.Originally posted by SingaporeMacross:You are right when you say that images are necessary to help focus in prayer. If we pray before the statue, it does not mean that we are praying to the statue. The statue is not God. It can't hear our prayers. Statues merely direct our attention, not only to the person that God has blessed in this life, statues help the people who are praying to look beyond the plaster or wood to the giver of all gifts, God himself.Originally posted by shade343:By concentrating and focusing on them, you are already praying to them. I sometimes wonder how do christians focus without an image?
The purpose of the staue is to help you focus. Of course when you pray, you are praying to God. Who else can it be?Originally posted by SingaporeMacross:If we pray before the statue, it does not mean that we are praying to the statue. The statue is not God. It can't hear our prayers. It is possible to focus, but it is incredibly hard. Perhaps music or hymns help.
