for Catholics, even if you are good, you still have to be in purgatory for an infinite amount of time.
for Christian, even if you are super duper ultra bad, if you are born-again, you can go to heaven.

imho many fear the final destination in their afterlife, if there is afterlife, and thats why they choose to believe in or being something that can 'guarantee' the better destination...
in this aspect its is fear of suffering that is pushing the urge to follow a belief... doing good hoping for something good in return isnt selfless good... believing in something in return for a 'trip' isnt true faith...
thats my own belief... i rest my case -
