Col 2:16 "So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,
17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
There was a heretical problem in Colosse that arose being taught by the legalists Judaizers and errorists called the Gnostics.
The Judaiizers taught that salvation is not complete in Christs, in order to be complete one must follow certain Jewish practices and regulations like eating only certain kinds of food, drinking only certain kinds of drink and respecting certain days v. 16
But these things were only symbols, representations and shadows of Christ. Like for instance the 'Sabbath' day, these day is typological of the rest that Christ would give to everyone who will believe/trusts in Him, now that Christ has come these are already gone,
v.17 these are mere shadows pointing to Christ, Christ is the substance.
Another heretical group are the Gnostics, they claim to have all these esoteric knowledge which the Christians do not have. One likely teachings of the gnostics is that God must be approached to the mediation of angels [a belief common in RC today], so one must pray to the angels for intercession.
In verse 18, the word "worship" actually means having beliefs and practices toward supernatural powers, in this case angels. And prayer certainly fits that category. Paul says do not do these things. these may outwardly look humble but no these things [the things taught by the Judaizers and gnostics v. 16, 18] are actually pride.
It is just saying that I can be spiritually mature without Christ Jesus the head. Read it again and take note of the last verse, verse 19, our growth is not in these false teachings but in Christ.
16 Therefore, do not let any one judge you in food or in drink, or in respect of feast, or a new moon, or of sabbaths:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
18 Let no one condemn you in willing humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
19 And not holding the Head, from whom all the body nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, increases to the increase from God.
Praying to angels is strictly forbidden and sinful, it is tantamount to worshipping them.

He simply means do not worship the devil.
Indeed that they are the messengers of God. But can they not pray for us? Since God has appointed them to look over our well-being.
Angels are here to minister to us and are God's messengers, they do not have the power to change anything except when directed by God to do so.

As Christians, we only worship the LORD and no other be it then or now... it is a commandment.
Not true. Chrisitians should learn how to discern the deeper meaning of the commandments. From my point of view, such a commandment was necessary to prevent the people then from worshipping false gods.
DEUTERONOMY 4:15-19
15 “Take careful heed to yourselves, for you saw no form when the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, 16 lest you act corruptly and make for yourselves a carved image in the form of any figure: the likeness of male or female, 17 the likeness of any animal that is on the earth or the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, 18 the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground or the likeness of any fish that is in the water beneath the earth. 19 And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the LORD your God has given to all the peoples under the whole heaven as a heritage.
DEUTERONOMY 8:19-20
19 Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the LORD your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish. 20 As the nations which the LORD destroys before you, so you shall perish, because you would not be obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.
Matthew 4:10 (New King James Version)
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you,[a] Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”[
He simply means do not worship the devil. Nor any other idol. Because if you pray to angels, you are worshipping them... and the verse clearly says YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD... AND HIM ONLY SHALL YOU SERVE, which means serve GOD ONLY... not angels
When you pray to angels, you are not serving them. See the reasoning I gave above. Angels are celestial beings created by The Father.
why pray to the messenger when as children of the Living GOD, we have direct access to the Father and to Christ who sits at His right hand... ? Christ has direct access to GOD where as sometimes angels have to contend with the principalities of this world.Originally posted by SingaporeMacross:Indeed that they are the messengers of God. Yeah, that's what we do wad. Talk to them and ask them to pray for us lah.Originally posted by breytonhartge:You pray to GOD... you go to HIM direct. you can talk to angels which is different from praying to them.
to which I agree with you... but, why talk to them when we can talk to GOD and JESUS direct?Originally posted by SingaporeMacross:Yeah, that's what we do wad. Talk to them and ask them to pray for us lah.
And there should be no doubt that one is only allowed to worship God.
Prayer is merely communing. The thing is angels are celestial beings. There is nothing wrong to pray to them. Same thing. Jesus is a celestial Being. So you pray to him. And by praying to them, arent you praying to god as well?Originally posted by breytonhartge:originally posted by shade343

You say rightly, angels are celestial beings created by the Father TO SERVE US, so I ask the question again, why pray to angels when we are to judge them and they are our servants?
Is it not better to pray to JESUS who sits at the right hand of GOD? Who intercedes for us already? If GOD Himself intercedes for us, why do we need to pray to beings lesser than us?
ROMANS 8:34
34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

but the question posted is whether we as christians pray to angels.. which we cannot do.
because JESUS and the FATHER ARE ONE. SO same thing. but angels are not one with the FATHER.Originally posted by shade343:Then why talk to jesus when you can talk to God Direct?
Prayer is a form of worship. No prayer is not merely communig... talking is also communing... so when you talk to your dog, you are praying to him? communing and prayer are different... you can talk to or ask angels questions... you have to be very careful when talking to angels, there are good angels and bad angels which are devils... they are the impostors so by praying to angels you cannot really be sure who you are praying to. Do you want to inadvertently pray to a devil? and by my extrapolation, worship a devil? I would not want to. But when you pray to Jesus/God, you are praying to the creator of the universe.Originally posted by shade343:Prayer is merely communing. The thing is angels are celestial beings. No. They are not. If tahts the case, why is there a need to call jesus the son? They are not the same thing. But they WORK TOGETHER AS ONE. In fact the phrase you just quoted just affirmed my thinking that everybody is part of god. We are part of God. Angels, as celestial beings, are part of God as well.Originally posted by breytonhartge:because JESUS and the FATHER ARE ONE. SO same thing. but angels are not one with the FATHER.
John 17:20-22
20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will[e] believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:

JESUS is not a celestial being, HE is the son of GOD and is GOD. Please do not make this mistake. Did you not see my posts, JESUS is higher than angels. He was before the angels were. He made them.
