Once upon a time, in ancient China, our ancestors used to think women with round and chabby face are pretty. Yang Gufei is a fat lady, based on all the ancient portraits found in China. In this century, we call that fat and to cetain extent unattractive. We now think that slim face is beautiful.
Likewise for men. In ancient time, our ancestors used to think that men with fair and smooth complexion are considered handsome. The monk in the fairy tale Journey to the West is described to be looking like that and all the female demons in the story went gah gah over him. Now when we see a face like that, we call it bah por. We now prefer tanned (like Louis Koo), tall and fit guys. -
