Good Christian books to recommend

Not sure if any of you likes to read those historical Jesus books by authors like Borg and Crossan. (http://christoffaithandhistory.blogspot.com/)
Or if you find the above a tat too liberal, then try works by their academic "opponent" Luke Timothy Johnson.
For a start can read their famous "Jesus @ 2000" email debate - http://www.ntgateway.com/xtalk/debate.html
And the battle rages on in "The Conversation Continues" - http://www.ntgateway.com/xtalk/conversation.html This time N.T. Wright joins in .. haha -

At least the book gives you facts like
1. the existence of the gnostic gospels
2. how the bible was canonized
3. the existence of Opus Dei
4. works of Da Vinci
..
It is just like the gospel today. You need to "package" it with magic shows, miracle healings, techno music, drama performances, pop songs etc. .. to entice people to find out more. -
I have read the book. Think it is not a good 'history book' becoz of its fictional nature. Of course the 'facts' u stated were reflected in the novel, but no one really knows whether Da Vinci's intent in his drawings are like that....we only know he is an artist that's all....whether he is more than what we think he is....is not a published fact right?Originally posted by Icemoon:Some people read history they can sleep liao ..

i think Dan Brown pointed out Constantine was the one who commissioned a new bible. For sure, we know Constantine was the Roman Emperor who made Christianity the state ideology, but to say he 'commissioned' a new bible, is probably not right.
The Opus Dei was reflected in a very bad light; politically motivated murders...haizzz....and Dan Brown even wrote the facts in his book endorsed by Opus Dei....where got pple so silly one....
The part abt the self-mortification (Silas)....think I read somewhere on the net that some members practised....think some of the mystical things catholics do i still could not comprehend.....mebbe some catholic frens here can share....
Hey, you got visited the Opus Dei office right? Is it really a separate order or prelature commissioned by the Pope?
To conclude, I believed it is not fair or safe to mix facts with popular fiction. -
Not true. The real baddie is the Catholic Church. Opus Dei was a victim. Can't you see the confession and love from Silas and the Bishop? I dunno the terminology they use, to me it is just a Vatican sanctioned organization.

I saw a da vinci documentary on scv that day. The lady host interviewed Brown, Elaine Pagels and other authors.
The show quite long siah .. at least one hour -

Of all the pple interviewed, I think Dan Brown has the least credibility
Elaine Pagels is a good author and she talks sense.....Dan Brown sounds very sensational.....cannot blame him.....it is his book everybody is talking abt and he mebbe concerned abt sales -

his book "holy blood holy grail" "messanic legacy" i have flipped thru b4....info like cathars being persecuted etc can all be found inside.....i think by choosing this book as his research, Dan Brown has little credibility (dun think he can say based on historical facts as even the weird guy author had said in the interview :When I write i write as "Pple said" "it was said"......)
Dan Brown's research mostly based on urban legends i believe....a mixture of true and half trues make his fictional book a bestseller....pple are always interested in conspiracy theories and care little abt the truth...that's why tabloids sell fast earn big $$$ -

I am currently reading Streams In The Desert, by L.B. Cowman - I am keeping this beautiful book for myself and my other half. I am just starting to know God and Christianity better, & this book is simply amazing and inspirational. I think the author wrote this in 1925 when she was tending to her dying husband. Very beautiful words which keep me going, especially on hard days when i feel in despair at life's difficulties and just wanna break down weeping, I whip this out, and it pushes me on to be strong, be brave and forge head
Get the Hardcover edition, it's been updated and revised - contains 366 daily devotional readings. Even though it's a little bulky for my overseas travelling, I'm keeping this copy as my faithful companion -
One book i strongly recommend...IN THE GRIP OF GRACE by Max Lucado. It is one of the most practical and powerful Christian books written....IMHO....the grace of God is not simply one of the topics in Christianity....it is the basis, a fundamental even, on the whole message of Jesus and the Cross...and this book has been written succinctly and beautifully on the wonderful love of God. And the author has written it in a fun-to-read manner....very refreshing!
After reading this book, i gained a deeper understanding of the Gospel and fell deeper in love with Him....coz He first loved us!
But somehow, this book is not readily available....try looking around though...
